Mandown Support Group

If your feeling down, so down that you can't see a way out, you are not alone.

A lot of men find it hard to talk about their feelings and keep their emotions to themselves. Suicide in men is one of the biggest killers in the UK. Chrysalis runs support groups for men aged 34 - 55 across Yorkshire.

Suicide is a subject people avoid talking about, people don't like to admit to the times they've felt suicidal and this silences a huge factor behind the shocking statistics right now.

4,630 isn't just a number, it isn't just a statistic, its the amount of men who took their own life in the UK last year.

Men may avoid asking for help because it is sign of weakness. Finding ways to change this perspective is critical. Our support groups are run by volunteers, they provide invaluable spaces for men to come together to share experiences, speak openly about challenges and share information. Its not weak to speak and to share problems with like minded people, this can have great benefits. Whether you're feeling down, lonely or having suicidal thought don't tackle this alone.

Boys to men

When we are growing up we are told to stop crying, to harden up and to grow a pair. We are told to hide our feelings. Because of the way boys are socialized, their ability to deal with emotions has been systematically undermined. Men are taught, point-by-point, not to feel, not to cry, and not to find words to express themselves.

Men may convert one feeling into another. Men may convert stereotypically feminine feelings, such as sadness or vulnerability, into feelings like anger or pride—feelings more socially acceptable for them to experience.

This is the stigma we need to breakaway from.

Silence is a killer

and it's time to speak up.

What is a support group? Support groups are core to our work. They provide invaluable spaces for members to come together to share experiences, speak openly about challenges and share information. The results can be astounding with members often trying new things and feeling more positive Our groups are run by volunteers, many of who have lived experience of mental illness either personally or in a caring role.. What they have in common is the support, understanding and acceptance one can only get from someone who has been where you are.

Our Mandown support groups are for men who are going through a rough time at the moment and feel like they have no one to talk to or feel embarrassed to talk to friends and family. We run a friendly and non judgemental safe place for you to come and have a chat and a brew.
We can also signpost you to our partner groups that you may have a interest in.
